Getting to Chessington

Straight up the A243

The A243 runs from Leatherhead over M25 junction 9, past Chessington World of Adventures and through Chessington to the Hook junction with the A3. It's the most direct run we have into London, about 20 minutes from our yard.

Two things slow it down. In summer the theme park fills the A243, which is partly why the Malden Rushett junction was rebuilt with new signals. And the Hook Underpass at the A3 is a known peak time bottleneck. We time Chessington deliveries round both.

Chessington is a corner of Greater London poking into Surrey, so London rules apply. The London Lorry Control Scheme keeps lorries over 18 tonnes to main roads from 1pm on Saturday unless they have a permit, so mention a Saturday afternoon pour when you book.

Pouring in Chessington

London Clay and a lot of new building

Chessington sits on London Clay, which shrinks in dry summers and swells in wet winters, especially near trees and hedges. Footings here often go deeper than planned. The Bonesgate Stream rises near Chessington Golf Course and runs through Castle Hill to the Hogsmill, and the ground along it is wetter.

Most of the housing is 20th century, and the old RAF Chessington site was rebuilt as housing in the 1990s. More is coming. A developer has proposed up to 2,000 homes at Hook Park, north of Clayton Road, and Chessington World of Adventures is spending £50 million on a Minecraft themed expansion with a new hotel due in 2027.

For trade customers, the Chessington Industrial Estate round Cox Lane and Davis Road is the main site. Kingston Council approved seven new industrial units there in January 2025.

Access and permissions

What to know before a Chessington pour

Chessington is run by the Royal Borough of Kingston, not Surrey County Council.

No conservation areas

None of Kingston's 26 conservation areas is in Chessington or Hook. The national rule still applies: a new front drive over 5m² needs permission unless it drains to a lawn or border.

Suspensions and dropped kerbs

Bay suspensions cost £41 per five metre space per day with over a week's notice. A dropped kerb has a £183.86 inspection fee, and the council's Highways team builds it.

Drainage

Kingston's flood records log over 300 sewer flooding incidents across KT9 since 1988. Near the Bonesgate Stream or Castle Hill, get levels and drainage checked before the pour.

Concrete in Chessington: your questions answered

Who delivers concrete in Chessington?

Surex Concrete delivers volumetric concrete to Chessington and Hook, KT9, from its yard in Effingham about 20 minutes away up the A243. The truck mixes on site, so you can order from 1m³ and pay only for what you use.

Is Chessington in London for lorry rules?

Yes. Chessington is in the Royal Borough of Kingston, so the London Lorry Control Scheme applies and lorries over 18 tonnes are restricted on residential roads from 1pm on Saturday. Ask about Saturday afternoon slots when you book.

Do I need planning permission for a driveway in Chessington?

Only if it's a new front driveway over 5m² that doesn't drain to a lawn or border. Chessington and Hook have no conservation areas, so no extra Article 4 rules apply.

How deep should footings be in Chessington?

Your building control officer decides, because London Clay moves with the seasons and trees make it worse. Deep footings are common here, and we batch on the day to what the trench takes.

Do you supply the Chessington Industrial Estate?

Yes. We can supply unit floors, yard slabs and hardstanding round Cox Lane and Davis Road, from 1m³ up to full day pours, to your engineer's specification.

Is there a minimum concrete order in Chessington?

We deliver from 1m³. Orders under 3m³ carry a part load charge, and at 3m³ or more there isn't one.
