Getting to Surbiton

In off the A3, not under Tolworth bridge

Surbiton is about 25 minutes from our yard. The A3 runs through Berrylands at the Tolworth Underpass, and the A240 Ewell Road runs from Tolworth into Surbiton and on to Kingston.

The railway bridge on the A240 at Tolworth has a height restriction, and London's lorry routes send tall vehicles round it. So we come off the A3 rather than up through Tolworth. The underpass itself has flooded in very heavy rain, which TfL has tried to fix with more frequent drain clearing, so on a stormy day we allow extra time.

Surbiton is in London, so the London Lorry Control Scheme keeps lorries over 18 tonnes to main roads from 1pm on Saturday unless they have a permit. If you want a Saturday afternoon pour, say so when you book.

Pouring in Surbiton

Pooley's New Town and the Surbiton Stream

Much of Surbiton was built as a Victorian new town. After the railway station moved to its present site in 1838, Thomas Pooley laid out streets round Claremont Gardens, and by 1865 Victoria Road, Claremont Road and Brighton Road were lined with terraces and semis. Plenty of those have narrow side passages or none at all, so garden rooms and rear extensions often need a line pump from the road.

Berrylands and the KT5 side are more suburban, with semi detached houses making up about half the homes there by one estimate. Tolworth has its own shopping centre on the Broadway and the Red Lion Business Centre for trade customers between Tolworth and Surbiton.

The ground is mostly Thames terrace gravel and London Clay. Near the Surbiton Stream and the Hogsmill it gets wetter, with softer ground on top of the gravel, so check the dig before a pour there.

Access and permissions

Suspensions, conservation and flooding

Surbiton is run by the Royal Borough of Kingston, not Surrey County Council.

Bay suspensions

Outside Kingston town centre a bay costs £41 per five metre space per day with more than a week's notice, or £61.60 with less. Anything starting within five days has to be booked by phone.

Conservation areas

Surbiton has several, including Surbiton Town Centre (1991), Claremont Road, Victoria Avenue and Surbiton Hill Park. None has an Article 4 direction on driveways, but a dropped kerb in one needs planning permission.

Surbiton Stream

The Environment Agency has a flood warning area for the Surbiton Stream covering Berrylands, Alexandra, Surbiton Hill, Tolworth and Hook Rise. Near it, agree slab levels and drainage first.

Concrete in Surbiton: your questions answered

Who delivers concrete in Surbiton?

Surex Concrete delivers volumetric concrete to Surbiton, KT5 and KT6, including Tolworth and Berrylands, from its yard in Effingham about 25 minutes away. The truck mixes on site, so you can order from 1m³ and pay only for what you use.

Can a concrete truck get under the Tolworth railway bridge?

We don't use that route. The A240 bridge at Tolworth has a height restriction, so we come in off the A3 at the Tolworth Underpass instead.

Can you pour concrete behind a Victorian house in Surbiton?

Yes. A line pump runs from the road through the house, a side passage or over a wall, up to about 100 metres, so the truck doesn't need to reach the garden.

Is Surbiton at risk of flooding?

Parts of it. The Environment Agency has a flood warning area for the Surbiton Stream covering Berrylands, Alexandra, Surbiton Hill, Tolworth and Hook Rise. Agree slab levels with your designer if you're near it.

Can you deliver in Surbiton on a Saturday?

Yes, but the London Lorry Control Scheme restricts lorries over 18 tonnes on residential roads from 1pm on Saturday, so ask about afternoon slots when you book.

Is there a minimum concrete order in Surbiton?

We deliver from 1m³. Orders under 3m³ carry a part load charge, and at 3m³ or more there isn't one.
